The dorm room. It is what is on most incoming college freshmen’s minds. Will I like my roommate? How will I make my room a place I want to be? Where do I even begin with decorating a room I’ve never seen before? These were all questions I was asking myself the summer before my freshman year of college. And don’t even get me started about the stress I had when I first walked into my room. There are so many unknowns when you go into college, and I promise that you are not the only one who might be stressed or anxious. While I don’t have the power to ensure that you like your roommate, I can provide you with some cozy aesthetic room ideas. I know for me at least, sometimes I just need a starting point for ideas when decorating, so here are some tips to spark ideas of how to make your dorm room feel like home.

Add a Rug

A great way to make your dorm room feel like your space is by adding a rug! It can bring some much-needed warmth to the room and help to make it feel more cozy. Think about it, would you want to live in a room that has just a wood or tile floor? Or in a room that has a rug to break up the hard ground? A rug will help to make your space feel more inviting and feel like a space where you can relax. It can also help to bring some of your personality into the room, depending on whether you get a solid color or a patterned rug. There are so many different options out there, so you can find one that will really make the space feel like home to you.

Include Lots of Pictures

Pictures are a great way to remind you of home. They help to make the space feel personal. A great way to hang up lots of pictures is to get a corkboard or whiteboard to hang them on. This is also helpful to switch pictures out easily as you make new memories! You can also get some fun frames to hang your pictures in as a cozy way to make your walls less boring. Whichever your vibe is, go for it! Just having pictures in some format will make your room feel more like home. 

Wall Art 

No one wants to walk into a dorm room every day that has bare walls. That is no fun and will definitely not help you feel at home in your space. You need to claim it as your own by decorating your walls! If this feels like a daunting task, try getting a fun flag or canvas banner that fills up a lot of the space but still shows your personality. That way, your room will still feel cozy, but you don’t have to worry about being an interior designer. They can provide you with the option of how much light you would like to have in your room at a given time and give you more control over your space. 

Show some school pride

Reminders of home are great, but also make your school feel like your new home! You can add decorations that represent your school or your college town. Having something about your school in your room will help to make the entire campus feel like home. It will help your school to feel like yours and create a sense of community and belonging. And if your school colors aren’t your vibe, there are alternative decorations to show your school pride without disrupting the cozy aesthetic you are trying to create.

Plants are a great way to bring life to your room (yes, even fake ones!). They help to make your space feel lived in and less like a space that is just being visited. Just the smallest touch of green can make your room feel a little more cozy and like home. 

Cozy blankets and pillows

You can’t have a cozy room without adding blankets and pillows. These are actually probably some of the first things you think of when you think of a cozy room. A big blanket is perfect for late-night studying or just hanging out with friends (and it just makes your bed look cozy). Then, if you get some pillows to layer on your bed, you are golden! Pillows and blankets are the easiest way to help you achieve the cozy aesthetic for your room while also making it feel homey.
